Traditional Food Security

We are passionate about the preservation and promotion of community based food systems that allow for Indigenous youth and families to access traditional foods harvested with love, respect, and care. Generosity is what gratitude looks like in practice, and so the gifting of traditional foods is an important value and rite of passage that we work into our program whenever we can.

“I just want people to love this food as much as my Grandmother loves it.”- James

In our short time growing Reclaiming Our Roots, we have been concerned by the food shaming and stigma we have experienced towards the traditional foods we hold so sacred. We acknowledge the impacts that colonialism has had on our traditional food systems, creating disconnection between the land and body in various ways. Feeding others feeds us, and we are committed to the promotion and protection of traditional foods in contemporary diets.

Don’t overthink it!

Some people are intimidated to try traditional foods, especially meats. Don’t over think it- cook it like you would any other meat and enjoy! Try new or old recipes and share what works for you and your family.

Celebrate it!

Enjoy the food, share it with your family, share your pictures with us online, and help normalize the integration and celebration of traditional foods.

#IndigenousFoodSovereignty

Share the love!

Indigenous food systems are based on our kinship ties: with the land, with the food, with each other. We don’t ask for anything in return but you can support us by sharing your pictures and experiences and spreading food and care with your community members when you can.
