Mentorship

In depth on the land learning and opportunities.

Reclaiming Our Roots was born on a strong desire to share the mentoring opportunities that we’ve experienced over the course of our life with young people in our community. Generous and long term mentoring is the only way to build a proficiency in land based skills and knowledge and to carry this essential knowledge on for many years to come. Each mentoring relationship is a bit different, but can include:

1-on-1 on the the land mentoring in multiple skills

Hands-on learning built around your interests

All costs covered

Meals, travel, any supplies or equipment you may need

Paid leadership opportunities

We love including our mentoring youth as facilitators for events and workshops.

Support and guidance on and off the land

We’re here to support you in other aspects of your life as well, not just land based skills.

“Reclaiming Our Roots has had a tremendous impact on my life, and my culture exploration journey. The program and mentorships allow me to be able to explore my culture from a land-based and hands-on practice, it also has taught me how to appreciate the land that I share with others, and how I interact with the land.  Through James’ and Chenise’s mentorship, they have taught me not only harvesting skills, and about my indigenous heritage but it also has taught me some personal life skills such as boundaries, respect, self-worth, and much more. Through their individual life experiences and stories, they have taught me different life lessons, and cultural lessons as well as allowed me to share my own perspectives and life stories with them.”

— Alex, youth mentee since 2019

What are we looking for in mentees?

Open minded

Ideally we are looking for young people that are open to learning a variety of different skills and enthusiastic about hands-on learning, including the harvesting and processing of animals.

Self motivated

We meet a lot of parents and support folks who would love for the young people in their life to want to do this, but it is very important to us that mentees are the ones that are initiating this learning and relationship.

Barriers to access

We want to ensure that our mentoring hours go to young people who have multiple barriers to accessing this knowledge. This lack of access could be related to disconnection or barriers accessing their communities, mental or physical health conditions, transportation, socioeconomic factors, or otherwise.

Our mentorship stream is temporarily closed for new applications.
